· compost is the staple diet of every healthy plant
· composting a good way to start ---- to make a difference to protect our environment
· a 3:1 paper/cardboard to garden/kitchen waste by volume gives high quality compost
· a wide low heap is better than a high one
· always make the heap directly on the soil to give worms access to it
· rain moistened heaps work best
· turning is unnecessary
· if inordinate amounts of kitchen waste are included add lime to reduce acidity/encourage worm activity
· avoid thick layers of grass
· shredding hedge clippings will reduce the time they take to become good compost
· avoid glossy paper, disease plant material (rose leaves with black spot), pernicious weed roots (ground elder), plant material that has been treated with a herbicide, cooked food
· gather autumn leaves into a heap ---- cold fungal action (rather than bacteria) helps to break down the leaves -- it will take a year ---- leaf mould is well worth waiting for
