· the sustainable use of our water resources is increasingly important for us all, especially the gardener
· most plants require more water in summer than in winter
· soil type dictates water needs to a great degree ---- clay soils can be wet in winter and baked dry in summer ---- sandy soils are loose/open and do not hold water ---- between these lie other soil types ---- all can be improved so that plants can access the nutrients they need ---- water carries the necessary elements to plant rootlets
· apply a mulch to moist soil in spring ---- damp newspapers plus compost ---- gravel/stone chippings can be used ---- control weeds ----provide shelter as winds dry soil out ---- avoid disturbing soil during dry spells
· save rainwater
· prioritise watering ---- food crops first --- avoid over-watering ---- do not water in sunshine ---- a sprinkler is wasteful ---- avoid watering lawns
· grow drought resistant plants (list of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants provided)
