Travelling south on N11 turn left in Ashford village (opposite
Ashford House), continue to T junction (directly in front of
Hunters Hotel) and turn right. Entrance second gate on right.
Travelling north on N11 take turn for Hunter’s Hotel outside
Rathnew village continue for 0.8 km. Entrance is on left
before Newrath bridge.
The gardens were laid out towards the end of the 19th century
with plantings of many fine specimens including Rhododendron
arboretum, Magnolia Soulangeanna ‘Alba’, and Camellia japonica.
Also included are a number of specimen mature trees including
a fine Chile myrtle planted c. 1880 when the Butler family acquired
the property, A formal white garden in a sheltered enclosure behind
the house was added together with box hedging. According to Jane
Powers, Irish Time gardening correspondent, at its peak in June
when the white rose are in bloom, this quietly elegant garden is a
shimmering mass of snowy blossom and silvery foliage (Irish
Times Magazine, ‘Garden County’ Jane Powers 24.05.03 pp. 28/29).

This garden is one acre in size, divided into smaller areas to create
more interest. It has a natural stream and a bridge which connects
two of the gardens. It is very well planted with a large selection of trees,
shrubs and herbaceous plants. A lovely garden with lots of surprises
around every corner and ideas for all to try.
