Ger Scollard's Vegetable Garden Job Calendar
January
Make an outline garden plan, listing what and where you want to
grow.
Start purchasing seeds and see what needs to be done to prepare
for that crop. Seed catalogues are great sources of information
and will help your selection.
Weather permitting trench, dig and manure, or use appropriate soil
conditioning depending on what is planned for that area. For example,
don't put manure where you will be planting parsnips or add lime
to heavy soil.
Start indoor sowings of onion seeds and early cabbage.
Clear out compost, ready for spreading in prior to digging.
February
Continue bed preparation.
Tidy around asparagus and rhubarb and apply fertiliser if needed.
Start sprouting seed potatoes.
Sow spring onion seeds, broad beans, early peas, radish, and lettuce
and, towards the end of the month sow parsnip seed.
Plant shallots.
Start indoor sowings of tomatoes.
